Remove and Replace a Controller Card

$DEV_NAME $FRU_NAME, has been selected

    Note: If these procedures have been linked from the Alarm Details skip step 2.

  1. Before starting this service action enable the reserve cabinet(s) function.

    a) Reserve the cabinet(s) for maintenance.

    b) Enter a description of the service action (i.e. replacing a controller card).

    c) Select the estimated amount of time of the service action from the pull-down.

    d) Select the Reserve button.

    e) Other users will be alerted that this service action is in progress when they log in.

  2. If the correct controller card has been selected proceed to step 3 or select another controller card from the index on the left-side of the screen.

  3. Observe all ESD precautions.

  4. If needed, to help locate the correct tray, activate the blinking white locator LED: Set tray locator.

  5. The controller card is located in the middle of the tray when facing the rear of the tray.

    a) View the controller card location illustration.

  6. Locate the controller card that needs to be replaced with the blue LED ON, indicating a ready to remove state. If the blue LED is NOT ON, still proceed to next step.

  7. Verify that the controller card is ready to remove: $DEV_NAME - $FRU_NAME.

    a) The FRU Stat Status-State should be "offline-disabled" or "ready-disabled".

    b) If the controller card is NOT "offline-disabled" or "ready-disabled" call your Sun Service provider to assist with this service action.

  8. If the controller card IS "offline-disabled" or "ready disabled" and ready for removal, remove the Ethernet cable from the connector.

  9. Remove the fiber optic cable from the connector.

  10. Loosen the Phillips screw to unlock the latch handle.

  11. Pull the latch handles to release the controller card from the connector and remove it from the tray.

  12. Place the removed controller card in an antistatic bag.

  13. Insert the new controller card all the way in the chassis. Use care not to bend any pins.

  14. Push in the latch handles to secure the controller card with the connector.

  15. Tighten the retaining screw.

  16. Insert the fiber optic cable into the connector.

  17. Insert the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet connector.

  18. Allow enough time for the controller to boot, then check the controller LEDs to determine when the controller is operational. When the controller is operational, the green LED is On.

    Note: During a controller boot process, if the Power-On-Self-Test detects a fatal problem with the controller, the system prevents the controller from going online. If this happens, the amber LED, which normally indicates a controller failure, will not light.

  19. Verify that the controller card is ready-enabled: $DEV_NAME - $FRU_NAME.

    a) The FRU Stat Status-State should now be "ready-enabled".

  20. A new inventory will need to be created for the new controller card: Generate new inventory.

    a) Select the Generate button on the right side of the screen.

    b) After the New Inventory has been created select the Save button on the right side of the screen.

  21. Turn the tray LED Off: Clear tray locator.

  22. After this sevice action has been completed all Alarms will need to be deleted: Delete Alarms.

    a) From the left side of the screen select the "check mark" box to select all alarms.

    b) Select the Delete button to delete all of the alarms.

    Note: Be sure to delete any associated alarms from all other monitoring applications.

  23. Disable the reserve cabinet(s) function.

    a) Release the cabinet(s).

    b) Select the Release button.

  24. The revision level of the new card can now be checked to confirm compatibility: $DEV_NAME - $FRU_NAME.

    a) Select the Generate Upgrade Report button from the Revision Analysis screen.

    b) Select the OK button in the pop-up screen.

    c) From the Patch table check the appropriate box on the left and then select the Apply button to apply the required patches.
