Shareware

This Java puzzle is distributed as shareware. If you like it, please send US$5 to the address below. In return you will get a code which will give you access to all solutions in the pop-up menu.

There is another way to get a code: you just have to find one of the non-trivial solutions described in BackSlide: the Twist. If that happens, a little window will pop up telling you a code. Please make a note of that code for future reference. (Of course, we'd appreciate the bucks even if you get the code by yourself ;-)).

The code must be entered in the file BackSlide.html. My apologies beforehand for this clumsy procedure, but I have not figured out a more elegant way (yet).

How to Register

Send US$5 cash to:

    MindSports
    P.O. Box 266
    6700 AG Wageningen
    Netherlands
Please include your address, preferably also an email address. We will send you a code asap.

Entering the Code

You cannot enter the code with the on-line version of BackSlide. It is only possible if you have the BackSlide package on your hard disk. If you found it on a CD-ROM, you must first copy the complete BackSlide folder to your hard disk before you can change anything.
You will need an editor like SimpleText (on a Mac) or Notepad (on Windows 95) to enter the code:

  • start SimpleText (on a Mac) or Notepad (on Windows 95)
  • choose File-Open and open BackSlide.html (on your hard disk)
  • on line 33 you will find:
      <param name="RegCode" value="XXX">
Simply replace the XXX by the code you have found or received.
Be sure not to change anything else. (OK, you may set the Sound param to Off.)
  • choose File-Save
  • choose File-Quit, and you're done

Known Problems

I'm sorry to say the cross-platform compatibility Java promises, isn't quite there yet.

  • Graphics and colors aren't consistent accross browsers/platforms. On a PC with 256 colors things are especially bad, I'm affraid. A 256 color Mac is OK, as is any high/true color system.

  • Manipulating on-screen objects behaves differently.
As it so happens, Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 loses the complete menu, instead of giving you more options, when you find a non-trivial solution. The only way to get the full menu is to enter a code that will pop-up, when you find one. So it's a litte more trouble for you MSIE users, but you'll get what's promised.
With Netscape Navigator 3.0 you get immediate access the all meta-solutions, but you have to enter a code anyway to keep access the next time you play.

  • Just In Time (JIT) compilers are very buggy. If you experience any problems (misplaced tiles, crashes) while playing BackSlide, please try disabling the JIT compiler. At least with MSIE you have that option, with Navigator you do not. Sometimes, quiting Netscape and trying again will work.
I try to work around these problems as much as I can, so please keep checking our site at http://www.mindsports.net/PuzzlePages/ for new versions.
